Selected Brief Updates:

HUNTER x HUNTER
by Togashi Yoshihiro
Started in #14, 1998 (4 volumes available)

Overview: The newest manga from Togashi Yoshihiro is progressing into the last leg of the Hunter Qualification Exam. Will Gon, Clapika, Reolio, and Kirua successfully become Hunters?
In this update: (Issue #50) No.033 The Final Examination Begins!
The final examination is an anything-but-killing-goes tournament. The loser advances up the bracket, and the one left at top will be the only one who will NOT become a Hunter. The first match between Gon and Hanzou starts. Gon is no match for Hanzou, but refuses to give up. Hanzou, trying to get Gon to say the magic words, breaks the boy's arm.

(Issue #52) No.034 The First One Accepted!?
Gon refuses to give up. Hanzou threatens to kill him, but Gon replies that all will be moot if Hanzou kills him. Hanzou realizes that Gon's will to find his father meant more to the boy than death, and gives up. Gon refuses to let Hanzou give up, but Hanzou knocks him unconscious.

(Issue #4/5) No.035 Light and Shadows Part 1
Gon wakes up to receive a Hunter License from Satotsu. Gon tries to reject the card, but Satotsu says that once accepted, a Hunter cannot step down nor take the Qualifications Examination again. Satotsu convinces Gon that what was important is what the person does as a Hunter, not the process of becoming a Hunter. Gon asks how the others were doing with the exam, and Satotsu replies that it was all over. Satotsu further tells Gon that Kirua was the one who failed because he killed his opponent. The matches were going smoothly until Kirua hit Gitarakle, who turned out to be Kirua's eldest brother.

MEIRYOUTEI GOTO SEIJUROU
by Kazu Hajime
Started in #52, 1997 (4 volumes available)

Overview: Seijurou is the reckless, violent student body president of Meiryou High School. He is so feared that his nickname is Meiryoutei ("Emperor of Meiryou"). What havoc will he wreak on his students (or force his student council to do) this time?
In this update: (Issue #50) Ballot 46: Hayata's Melancholy
One morning, as Hayata walks to school, he is stopped by a girl who asks him out on a date to a skating rink. Seijurou hears of this, and drags the rest of the council to "help" Hayata win the girl's heart. With all the mishaps caused by Seijurou, Hayata believes the date was a failure, but the girl asks him out again, because he was "more interesting" than she thought.

(Issue #51) Ballot 47: Film Festival
The suggestion box has been getting requests for a film festival. The Council decides to hold one; when no one can decide what movie to show, Seijurou announces that they will make one. A few intense days of filming all over campus create a very diverse film. The students enjoyed the film more than they planned, and the Council was happy about their fun time filming.

(Issue #52) Ballot 48: Training Niku
The Student Council got an ultimatum from the school about their dog Niku: either it starts behaving or it goes to the pound. They take Niku to obedience school; he comes back seemingly obedient but actually worse. Nevertheless, Seijurou enters a dog show. At the dog show, Niku shows miraculous stunts and wins a special award. After the show, Niku's behavior improves.

(Issue #1) Ballot 49: Kindergarten Student
Iori finds a child wandering through high school. Little Hideaki turns out to be Satokagura's son, who came to Meiryou to draw a sketch of "dad at work"... but all Hideaki sees is when the teacher bumps into the Four Kings of Meiryou. Seijurou helps Satokagura gain his child's admiration by pretending to be blown away.

(Issue #2/3) Ballot 50: Short-term Exchange Student
An exchange student named John Goodman joins Cliff's class. Cliff takes John to Seijurou and company, saying that none of his classmates want to talk to him because they don't know enough English. Seijurou seizes the opportunity to teach lots of weird things to John, which resulted in John being able to have fun with Cliff's class.

(Issue #4/5) Ballot 51: Yatsuki's Return Match!
One day, Yatsuki comes into the Student Council room asking for a rematch. Seijurou tells Cliff and Hayata to spy on Yatsuki to see if he's setting traps, but they only find Yatsuki training normally. The day of the match arrives, and after one pass both their wooden swords shatter. Yatsuki admits defeat after that pass, saying that he couldn't accept Seijurou's offer for a second pass.
